La Mongie has a great range of beginner slopes, but offers some spectacular red and blue runs, one reaching nearly as high as Pic Du Midi, which can also be reached by gondola. A lift-ride over the valley takes you to sleepy Baréges, a neighbouring village with fantastic nursery slopes and plenty of scenic, tree-lined green runs. There are also some challenging red runs and fast blue pistes, and the famous Star Park, featuring jumps and landing mats for skilled skiers and boarders. The ski resorts of Cauterets, Bagneres de Luchon and St. Lary are just over an hour away. The spa town of Cauterets sits beneath a circle of mountains and is a great place for not only skiers but spectators too. Slightly further away is Piau Engaly, one of the highest resorts in the Pyrenees, and offering the most incredible views. With the top station at 2600 metres, the resort has some excellent, long runs for intermediate skiers, and a range of tricky red and black runs for the more advanced. Although Piau Engaly has only 5 green runs, their gentle incline and short length make this resort ideal for first-time skiers. The resort is also a favourite amongst spectators, as the runs all curve towards a central base, and there are lots of typically French cafes and restaurants to relax in. Skiing in the Pyrenees is a very laid-back affair, without the noise, queues and nightclubs of the Alps. Lift passes average at 29 euros for a day, and insurance can be purchased for 3 euros. Discounted weekly and weekend passes are available, and magnetic N’PY passes can even be topped-up online. Whichever resort you choose, you’re guaranteed a variety of fun runs and stunning scenery.
